Possible Projects

This is not a complete list!

Staff who've spoken: 

• M De Vos talked about her logic programming & also programming frameworks.
• JH Davenport - spoke of factorizing & the mathematical web services.
• A Barry - spoke about machine learning visualization, and artificial life (esp. modelling predators.)  He sent me a list of projects.
• C Furman  - spoke about email, predictive text and visualizing proofs.  He has a web page of projects.
• J Padget & JP Fitch spoke of spoke about several projects that were subparts of the problem of making a sort of a virtual AI orchestra.  Here are their slides (in pdf).  J Padget has a projects web page, but I don't think it's up-to-date.
• L Watts spoke about his HCI projects: 
•  I'd be interested in supervising a dissertation on dynamic, abstract, graphical representations of people using text-based communications tool. The goal of the project would be to use behaviour at the interface (mouse-over, scrolling, keystrokes) to drive alternative representations in terms of a changing representational scheme (shape, size, colour and inter-shape distance). • NN Vorobjov spoke apparently about maths & some AI projects, here are his projects.
• PJ Willis spoke, apparently about graphics.  This is what he emailed me:
• Topics in virtual reality, in particular making VR mechanics work and non
  hierarchical modelling. Might also be interested in some graphics things in
  2d and 3d visualisation.
  
• F Causa of EE spoke at the end of lecture 26 Feb about several projects around the results & models of her lab's work on lazers & optics.  She has proposed several projects, she also spoke on behalf of J Sarma (projects below under "staff who have not spoken").
• D Richardson - spoke of neural networks and liquid state machines.
• Duncan Allsopp of EE described some of the large number of projects he proposed.
• D Paddon described some graphics projects:
• animation of algorithms
• GA for animating surfaces
• modelling traffic at roundabouts
  
• C Willis spoke about L-systems and sunspots, graphics in general.  She provided this list of her projects which also has a couple of D Paddon's.  C Willis & D Paddon are each willing to supervise the projects the other proposed.
  
• R Bradford projects  spoke about algebra, cyrptography & networks - including some visualization & HCI type projects.
• P Hall talked about graphics (a little) vision (a lot) & machine learning.
• Adrian Evans of EE spoke about his project titles:  
• His research interests are:  Image Processing: Motion estimation, nonlinear filtering and feature extraction applied to medical, remote sensed and colour images. Video Coding: wavelet and matching pursuit transforms, single- and multi-reference frame motion estimation and compression
•  Project titles:
• Improved multi-reference frame motion estimation 
• Resolution enhancement of colour images 
• J Bryson talked about her AI projects.  They are towards the end of her presentation slides (in pdf, here's an html version, but it's missing the pictures).
• Adrian Bowyer finished things off with his cat coat project.

• Jayanta Sarma proposed a couple projects.
  
• Andy Powell hosted an excellent project last year.  Here's this year's idea:

  Title: Using FOAF to build conference communities
  Supervisor: Andy Powell, UKOLN
  Friend of a friend (FOAF) is a Semantic Web language for creating a Web of
  machine-readable homepages describing people, the links between them and
  the things they create and do - www.foaf-project.org. This project will
  use one of the programming languages below to build a demonstration tool
  that allows conference delegates to register details about themslves and
  their projects, activities, papers and other interests.  Using this
  information, the tool will allow people to find others with similar
  interests and possibly drive other community-specific tools. In September
  his year, UKOLN is hosting ECDL 2004, a european digital library
  conference, at the University of Bath - www.ecdl2004.org.  If this project
  is successful, the developed tool will be offered for experimental use by
  conference delegates. Keywords/languages: FOAF, RDF, XML, Perl, Java, C

• Many HCI lecturers didn't because they have their own MSc program.  But if you are very interested in HCI you might want to contact in person  H Johnson or E O'Neill.  Notice that many non-HCI lecturers propose at least one HCI project.
